ORIGINAL STORY: Damaris is 13 years old and is in the 4th grade. Even though she loves school, she was kept out of school for a few years so that she could help take care of her half sister Phyllis. Math is her favorite subject and she tells us that Ms. Sarah is her favorite teacher. Damaris dreams of being a teacher herself. Her life is tough. She lives in the slums with her father and his fourth wife. Her mother died when she was young. She tells us that she doesn't have the love of her father. One thing that was apparent during the interview is her beautiful smile. She is also very quiet, with long pauses between our questions and answers. She talks very softly and begins to cry big tears as she tells us about her sister who passed away, her half sister Phyllis who is already living at the orphanage, and her half brother Jackson who is just 5 years old. She wants to move away from the slum so God can help her with her studies and make all the shame go away. She is a fighter but has huge hurts. At the end of the interview, Hellen encourages her and pulls her close on her lap just as the tears begin to flow.
