She is ten years old and loves science class at school. She hopes to one day become a doctor. She's a little shy, and doesn't answer many questions without picking at the chair and squirming around a lot. She dreams of going to Mombasa some day. Pauline lives just outside of the slums in Kitale. Her father has died and she does not know where her mother is. She stays with her grandmother, although her grandmother recently left, stating she was "going to Uganda," and has not returned. Pauline's neighbors now try to care for her but Pauline doesn't know how much longer they will do so. She feels abandoned and lonely and explains, as tears fall, that her life is in the hands of her neighbors. Despite this depressing reality, Pauline is sweet and innocent.
