Joyce is just six years old; when asked if she could anywhere in the world, enthusiastically and without hesitation says "America!" She is the sixth child in a family of seven children. She lives with both her mother and father who are jobless and must pick through trash each day just to find food to survive. Joyce tells us that she wants to have a better life and be able to live in the orphanage. Her friend Moses lives in the orphanage and she can see a change in Moses and hopes that her life will become like his. She seems to be a very sharp little girl and pays careful attention to the questions being asked and the discussions taking place.
