UPDATE #2: Dominic is now 20 and is waiting to begin medical school. He is working on getting into nursing and hopes to begin his courses later this year (2023). This guy has always pushed hard to excel and take advantage of the opportunities that sponsorship has created for him. UPDATE: This young man has truly thrived at Seed's. Given the chance to go to school and play soccer, have a dorm full of crazy brothers, he has poured his all into everything he does. We've loved watching him grow up in every way! He's now just finishing his 12th grade year and sitting for his National Exam. "If he passes", which we know he will, he's super smart and loves math, it will be off to University for him. Dominic behind that handsome smile and confident look is a 14 year old boy who is hurting deeply and needs a sponsor quickly. Someone who will take him in to their heart and begin communicating with him letting him know he matters and his life is important.
He is a product of rape and for that his mother always resented him, after the birth of his little brother, Gideon, the boys were abandoned and left to fend for themselves. From what we can gather Dominic was between 7 and 8 at the time. The boys went to live with their grandmother in the slum, who had a very difficult time providing for them. Gideon was taken into the orphanage a couple of years ago and Dominic has continued to live in the slum. Now with an uncle whose wife despises him, he has been left to provide for himself.
He struggles to share about his mom he is very bitter and hurt, words don't come easily as he tries to share the hardships he has faced.
Hellen told us how they heard of his struggles and reached out to him in April of 2013 to help. They invited him to come to school and receive 2 meals a day at the feeding center provided he would follow certain rules and be faithful to attend school. He agreed, AND he excelled in school. Math and Bible Class are his favorite subjects and he has earned very high scores on the national test. He breaks out into a huge smile as he shares his dream of being a banker and not just a worker he wants to "be the boss of the bank."
Since our interview, Dominic has been forced to gather firewood at night and try to sell it after school just to earn enough to get his basic needs met. His grades have begun to suffer, with a sponsorship to live at the orphanage he will be able to have a "peaceful time" and focus on his studies. This is one we really need to rescue he has so much promise!
