UPDATE: Fiona is now 13 and in 8th grade. She has thrived at Seed's and loves having so many "siblings" around. We've enjoyed watching her come out of her shell, seeing her personality grow and develop. She carries a quiet confidence about her, doing well in school and taking advantage of the opportunity to be in a safe place.

Recently Fiona's sponsor needed to let go of her sponsorship, so we are looking for someone else to come alongside this young lady as she gets ready to go into high school next year. She loves to write letters, and would enjoy receiving some too. Are you that person to walk with her through this next phase of her life?

ORIGINAL STORY: Fiona is 6 years old and the younger sister to Allan Mate. Allan as been at Seed's Children's Home since September of 2013, when he was staying with his Grandmother in the Kipsongo slum and his counsin Sharleen was sponsored. Sharleen said she wasn't leaving without him. For the last four years we thought Allan and Sharleen were siblings - but through a strange and difficult situation the real truth about Sharleen and Allan's families has come to light.

In January of 2017, Sharleen's uncle came to Seed's asking for custody. Our partners required that he seek custody through legal channels with the local Children's Office. After several months and much vetting, custody of Sharleen was given to her uncle and Sharleen left the Seed's Children's home. Our partners at Seed's as well as the staff here at Mighty Acorn were very skeptical of this situation and determined it would be something we would want to keep an eye on. Why did Sharleen's uncle want custody of her and not her brother Allan? We were not comfortable with the situation but had not legal ground to change anything. Allan was sad that Sharleen had left - but he wanted her to be with family if that was best for her, but you could tell he missed her a lot.

Then in June of 2017, about 5 months after Sharleen left Seed's, Hellen and Richard paid an unannounced visit to the uncle, Sharleen was not there - she had been given to her father. We had been told her father was diseased - he actually had been missing for several years. The situation Sharleen was found in was horrible - and with her were her two younger sister and a little cousin (Fiona).

Because the situation was so horrible, Hellen decided to bring all the girls with her as she got the Children's Office involved. Legal guardianship has been given to Seed's so the girls were all taken there for their safety and well being.  So not only did we get Sharleen back but 3 more hidden treasures!  Viona is so thrilled to be back with her brother Allan and her three cousins. . She's loving school and all her new friends.  Now we need to find her a sponsor. Someone to come alongside her and let her know she is loved and cherished. Someone to send her letters and family pictures, words of encouragement and a sense of value.

Are you that person - can your family help keep her at Seed's?
