Deborah is 12 years old and is in the 5th grade. She loves school and religion is her favorite subject. She dreams of being a doctor one day. She lives in the slums of Kitale with her mom. Her father passed away when she was very young. Although her mother remarried, her stepfather does not care to supply food for the family. Her mom goes and picks through the trash for food. She describes her struggles living in the slums and how many girls are pregnant because of rape. When she is not behind the school's walls, she is scared. She describes the groups of boys and men who pull girls aside and rape them. Her prayer is to be rescued from the slums, finish school, and help other girls get out of the slum. She wants to go to the orphanage to be able to study and reach her dreams. Deborah tells us how she fell and broke her arm but she still came to school. She is a strong girl with a tough persona.
